On Tuesday Lyft launched Women Plus Connect. This new feature matches women and non-binary drivers with women and non-binary riders. The move is an effort to improve safety and encourage more women and non-binary drivers to work with the company.
This new feature will give Lyft drivers an option to turn on a preference in the app to prioritize matches with nearby women and non-binary riders. However, it’s not a guarantee and if no riders that match that description are nearby, drivers with still be matched with men.
On the rider side of the app, women and non-binary riders will see an option to “count me in” on their app. Choosing this option will increase their chances of matching with women and non-binary drivers.
For drivers, the feature is based on the gender marker on their license on file, and for riders, on their gender setting within the app. Both riders and drivers will have the option to update their gender settings at any time to ensure it is reflective of their personal gender identity.
This new feature is currently available in San Francisco, Chicago, Phoenix, San Diego, and San Jose. Lyft plans to roll out this feature in more cities soon.
